Forbes Business Council: As Governments Mandate Climate Disclosures, Will Companies Backtrack Or Fortify Their Climate Commitments?

As a result of the proposed SEC emissions rule, will companies backtrack on or fortify their climate commitments?

The SEC’s proposed rule will demand more than mere announcements from companies regarding their climate goals. No longer can organizations claim to be "net-zero" without revealing a credible roadmap to success.

One-third of the world’s largest companies have set net-zero targets, but fewer than one in ten have a plan to get there. This rule could drastically shift how companies address their emissions.

Too many companies set goals based on what they see other companies doing rather than what makes the best sense for their business. The better solution is to not just say you’re doing the right thing, but to actually do the right thing.

The key lies in setting realistic goals, backed by thorough research and thoughtful, transparent strategy. By doing so, the risk of being accused of greenwashing or facing an SEC enforcement action diminishes significantly.

“At the end of the day, making climate commitments credible is less daunting than finding ourselves with a planet that is no longer livable for future generations.”

Discover how your company can set and achieve credible sustainability goals while avoiding the trap of "net-zero tunnel vision."
